Assertiveness Style

ASSERTIVENESS STYLE

Assertiveness approach is a useful style in solving specific conflicts.

It is the degree to which the resolution plan would be forced upon the interests of the involved conflicted parties.

This approach is a power-oriented style where we use our skills as the power to influence the involved conflicted parties to a certain resolution plan that serves all involved parties.

Our power could have different dimensions, e.g. our ability to argue, negotiate and influence the involved parties about the outcomes of the chosen resolution plan.

Assertiveness here means competing and standing up for human rights and defending a position that we believe is correct or simply pursuing a peaceful agenda over unknown and unexpected conflict consequences

Some conflict resolution plans require assertive mechanisms to resolve conflicts among conflicted parties for several reasons:

  1. Power Imbalance: In situations where there is a power imbalance between the conflicting parties, assertive mechanisms can help ensure that the interests and rights of the weaker or marginalized party are respected and addressed.

  2. Clear Communication: Assertive mechanisms facilitate clear and direct communication of needs, concerns and boundaries, which is essential for effectively addressing conflicts and finding mutually acceptable solutions.

  3. Boundary Setting: Assertive mechanisms enable individuals to establish and maintain appropriate boundaries, reducing the likelihood of conflict escalation or exploitation.

  4. Problem-Solving: Assertive mechanisms encourage a focus on addressing underlying issues and finding mutually acceptable solutions, rather than resorting to aggressive or passive-aggressive behavior.

  5. Respect for Self and Others: Assertive mechanisms allow individuals to assert their own rights and needs while also considering the rights and needs of others, leading to outcomes that are fair and balanced.

  6. Confidence Building: Assertive mechanisms can help individuals build confidence in expressing themselves and advocating for their interests, which is crucial for effective conflict resolution.

Overall, assertive mechanisms are necessary in conflict resolution plans to ensure that conflicts are addressed in a constructive and respectful manner and that the interests and rights of all parties involved are taken into account.
